| Description | Six Permian Gondwana coal basins, namely, Kuchma, Jamalganj, Barapukuria, Khalaspir, Phulbari and Dighipara, have been discovered in the northwestern part of Bangladesh at the subsurface at depths ranging from 150 m to 2364 m. These basins are fault-bounded asymmetric in nature, formed within the Archaean Basement Complex. The lower Permian Gondwana sequence contains five to eight coal seams with high volatile, low sulphur, bituminous coal. The total in-situ deposits of coal in the basins are more than three billion tons. Coal is being mined only in the Barapukuria coal basin by the underground longwall mining method. The Phulbari coalfield was proposed for open-cut mining, while the Dighipara, Khalaspir and Jamalganj coalfields are more suited to underground mining. The overlying Dupi Tila water-bearing loose sand, having a thickness ranging from 40.50m to 228.50 m presents the biggest challenge for any kind of mining. The deep-seated coal of the Kuchma basin may be studied for CBM/UCG/shale gas. Bangladesh needs energy for its development. At present, coal is the best alternative option compared to natural gas. As the gas production is depleting at a fast rate, mining of subsurface coal maintaining all environmental and socio-economic safeguards may be the best option to meet the future energy demands of Bangladesh.
