| Description | Water resources management in Bangladesh faces immense challenges in resolving diverse problems. Bangladesh receives huge quantities of water during the monsoon season, causing regular seasonal floods in its low-lying areas, and during the dry irrigation period, the scarcity of water threatens irrigation in many areas that leads to extensive use of groundwater. The use of groundwater increased with the introduction of high yield variety (HYV) seeds in the late 1960s to meet the food demands of the growing population. Declining trends in groundwater levels are due to over-exploitation for agriculture irrigation in rural areas and domestic and industrial use in cities like Dhaka. To protect the population from water-borne diseases, millions of hand tubewells (HTWs) (<100 m depth) have been installed that are mostly affected by arsenic contamination. Hence, deep tubewells (DTWs) have been installed (100–300 m depth) in an attempt to find a safe quality of water, mainly for drinking water supplies. However, the wells often contain high concentrations of iron, manganese, and chloride in coastal aquifers. Investigation of the aquifer systems, assessment and monitoring of groundwater storage and quality, preparation of a water budget and allocation plans are important when considering the adoption of sustainable management and governance strategy to ensure food security and a healthy society.
