| Description | In recent years, there has been an increase in the consumption of medicinal plants worldwide, due to factors such as the high cost of industrialised medicines, the lack of access by the population to medical/pharmaceutical assistance, and the propensity of consumers to use products of natural origin. The transposition of therapeutic agents from the sphere of traditional knowledge to the scope of institutionalised health care presupposes the responsibilities of the executors of these actions, a premise also applicable to herbal medicines. Proof of the safety and efficacy of phytomedicines is fundamental to the innocuous use of these products, especially considering that most of them do not yet have their toxicity profile well established. In this context, the pharmacovigilance of medicinal plants and herbal medicines is an emerging concern. This subject is worthy of attention since the increase in interest and the consequent use of these drugs has caused a corresponding increase in reports of adverse reactions resulting from them. Identifying and disseminating these undesirable effects, assessing possible risk factors, and taking note of possible interactions between products of plant origin and synthetic drugs, among others, will contribute to the rational use of medicinal plants and herbal medicines. In the final analysis, these efforts are towards achieving ultimate benefits for the population. Book Name: Phytotechnology |
