| Description | We have become quite familiar with harmonic loading in the earlier chapters (Biggs, J M 1964). Harmonic loadings expressed as F¯sinΩt or F¯cosΩt or both F¯(sinΩt+cosΩt) or F¯1sinΩt+F¯2cosΩt are observed in our daily life. The loading generated by centrifugal and reciprocating pumps, vibrational force induced by vortex shedding due to wind encountering a bluff body, and loads due to machines on foundation are all examples of harmonic loading. Earthquake loading could be considered as random harmonic loading. But we will not be dealing with such loads always. We sometimes come across suddenly applied loads held constant, impulsive loads, which are very large loads applied over very small duration. Pulse loads having load-time functions of different shapes like rectangular, triangular and also loads which gradually increase and remain constant called ramp functions and so on, or loads having time functions of any other arbitrary shape are also possible. In all such cases, we employ another technique called “Duhamel's Integral” to obtain the response. Nevertheless, the integral can also be elegantly employed in the case of harmonic and earthquake ground motions. Book Name: Structural Dynamics in Earthquake and Blast Resistant Design |
