| Description | Salivary electrolytes have been extensively studied, and the normal concentrations of the principal electrolytes are well documented (Tables 1 to 5). Unfortunately, from a diagnostic viewpoint, there is wide variation in values observed both between and within subjects. Concentrations of electrolytes alter as salivary flow rate alters and may vary with time of day in any one individual, while age and possibly sex may be sources of variation between individuals. Diet affects plasma concentrations of some ions and may therefore indirectly affect salivary concentrations. Book Name: Human Saliva: Clinical Chemistry and Microbiology |
