| Description | As the human and mouse genome projects approach completion, the challenge will be to determine the function of the many genes being discovered. Often, newly identified genes can be assigned a function based on their homology with known genes, but, to fully understand their function, one must study the phenotypic consequences of mutations in these genes. This effort, often called functional genomics, has the potential to revolutionize our understanding of genes that affect behavior and perhaps provide critical clues about the biological underpinnings of neurological and psychiatric disorders. The mouse represents an important model organism for these studies; a variety of mutations can be engineered in individual genes and progeny of mutagenized mice can be examined to identify genetic variants with specific behavioral anomalies.
