| Description | August Weismann was a naturalist from early childhood. He correctly interpreted the function of meiosis in cell division. His observations of the sexual cells of Hydrozoa led to the theory of the germ-plasm, which was published first in German and then in English. Weismann was an enthusiastic supporter of Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution, and correctly interpreted the process of sexual reproduction as a mechanism that creates the necessary variation for natural selection. Fertilization enables the mixing together of hereditary material from two different individuals. Contrary to the opinions of Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace, Weismann suggested that hereditary variation in natural populations was not a direct product of exposure to different external environmental conditions, but due to the internal process of sexual reproduction. Wallace discusses in detail a case elaborated upon by Herbert Spencer, who had argued strongly in support of the inheritance of acquired characters.
