| Description | Childhood sexual abuse is not uncommon and not restricted to any one socioeconomic group. Sexual activity between adults and children within the same family has been taboo throughout the world and throughout time. Unfortunately, this taboo has not been enough to protect children from the great harm that such activity causes them. Both within the family and in society at large, the child has been thought culpable of dishonesty and worthy of blame in the situations where disclosure has been attempted. Symptoms experienced by adults who were victims of childhood sexual abuse are those of a chronic or delayed post-traumatic stress disorder, as described by C. Courtois. It is vitally important that victims who disclose the abuse are met with acceptance, belief and hope for healing from their physicians. The patients need to understand that their dreams, nightmares and symptoms are a natural response to the trauma that they have suffered. Book Name: Challenges and Solutions in Patient-Centered Care |
