| Description | The potential causes of bullying in the workplace have been debated since the beginning of bullying research. Evidence from empirical studies of the last 20 years suggests that not only organizational variables such as work organization or leadership play a role but also the personalities of victims and perpetrators. In this chapter, we discuss individual antecedents of bullying. With regard to perpetrators the protection of self-esteem and lack of social competencies are considered as well as micropolitical behaviour and strategic bullying. With regard to bullying victims, the salience and outsider position of the victim, social competence and self-esteem, overachievement, clash with group norms and victims' provocative behaviours play roles. We finally address causal direction and the problem of differentiating subgroups of bullying victims: Potential causes of bullying may apply for a group of victims, but may not be a general explanation for all.
