| Description | In this chapter, we review research on how workplace bullying varies across cultures in its definition, prevalence, forms, and processes. We examine how cultural values influence how targets attribute and interpret the motives of perpetrators and cope with and recover from bullying, as well as how their reactions shape the responses of perpetrators and third parties. Drawing from Hobfoll's (1989) conservation of resources theory, we present a model that posits that cultural values partly determine how targets use resources to mitigate the adverse consequences of bullying. Implications of the model include: (1) how cultural values influence targets' interpretation of their social interactions, (2) how organizations that encourage more power distance unwittingly enable dysfunctional work relationships that can escalate into conflict and bullying and make coping more challenging, and (3) how cultural values impact on targets' willingness to report being victimized, possibly due to their fear of being blamed for the escalation of bullying.
