| Description | Sample preparation is a critical step in analytical toxicology. Recent developments in liquid-phase microextraction have been reported, with the goals of removing interferences from the environmental and biological matrices, such as heavy metals, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and abused drugs in complex matrices (environmental and biological matrices); reducing matrix effects; and concentrating the target analytes, among others. This extraction technique has evolved toward simpler, faster, and more ecological procedures (friendly to the environment), and with this, its applications have also been expanded in recent years. Liquid-phase microextraction has been presented in different formats, even miniaturized, and this has led to facilitatation not only of the automation of this technique but also of the requirement of a lower volume of extractant and sample volume, the latter being of crucial importance, especially when a very small volume of biological sample is available. In this chapter, applications of newly emerging developments in extraction and pre-concentration of liquid-phase microextraction of a vast category of compounds are reviewed and discussed.
