Description	Ionic liquid (IL) is an emerging field in analytical chemistry for the extraction and determination of a wide range of contaminants from diverse fields. ILs consist of a specific combination of cations and anions that possess various unique characteristics that enhance the extraction efficiency and sensitivity of target analytes in desired sample preparation. ILs show promising results in microextraction, which reduces the cost of extraction and the number of analytical steps, besides providing eco-friendly methodologies. These ILs come under the 'green' solvent criteria due to their miniaturized volume used for analyte pre-concentration from various matrices. ILs overcome most of the limitations of organic solvents faced by analysts in earlier days, proving them safe both for the environment and for human health, with the least toxicity reported to date. Application of IL in combination with microextraction is easily observed through past research papers published worldwide. Its utilization is increasing tremendously day by day by coupling it with various sophisticated analytical tools like LC-MS/MS, GC-MS/MS, ICP-MS/MS, etc. ILs improve the major analytical parameters, like recovery percentage (R%), limit of detection, and limit of quantification for maximum analytes, even though used in microliters (µL) for extraction.
