| Description | Like Die Zauberflöte, Entführung is performed today with much of its original dialogue cut, or else with completely new dialogue substituted. During the nineteenth century, Entführung was typically performed in London in Italian with new recitatives composed to replace the dialogue. This created the irony that the work, set in Turkey and unpopular in Italy, was invariably performed in London in an Italian translation. Mozart composed Entführung for The National Singspiel which had been founded in Vienna in 1778, three years before the composer's arrival in that city in 1781.$ ^{1}$ While the National Singspiel maintained an excellent ensemble of singers, a strong repertoire of works failed to materialise, and a great opportunity lay before Mozart to enrich a bland repertory and raise the form to new artistic heights. Mozart created a work far superior to that of any of his contemporaries, displaying a level of virtuosity, sophistication and invention that completely transcended the Singspiel genre. The work was an immediate success, and its subsequent popularity throughout Germany was unprecedented. Entführung was premiered in 41 cities outside Vienna during Mozart's lifetime, as well as occupying the stages of the three principal Viennese theatres.$ ^{2}$ Book Name: Curating Opera |
