| Description | The dissemination of Mozart's operas during the nineteenth century has been outlined in some detail, revealing a surprising persistence, demonstrating their adaptability and their resilience against the constant production of new works by later composers. By the end of the nineteenth century, as the thousands of operas that had been produced atrophied into a tiny cluster still in circulation, Mozart's operas endured alongside the best of Rossini, Donizetti and Bellini, armed with the halo of canonicity that his works had acquired during the century. The case of Don Giovanni and its venerated manuscript reflects Mozart's deification, which occurred in tandem with the success of his works (generally heavily adapted) in the marketplace. Away from the realities of the opera house, Mozart came to represent musical perfection, accompanied by a certain fragility and unworldliness that was reflected in the growing body of critical writing around his operas in particular.
