| Description | In the United States of America, the public's concern about drinking water safety has accelerated in recent years due to highly publicized outbreaks of waterborne diseases. One such highly visible outbreak of cryptosporidiosis occurred in Milwaukee, Wisconsin [Solo-Gabriel and Neumeister, 1996]. A study by the National Research Council [NRC, 1997] estimated that there were more than 600 outbreaks of waterborne diseases reported to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Prevention since 1971 and many more that were never reported. Of the waterborne outbreaks reported, they occurred throughout every region of the U.S. and in communities of all sizes. The NRC study also reported that 94% of the greater than 57,000 community water supplies in the U.S. serve less than 10,000 persons. Approximately 35,000 community water supplies serve less than 500 persons. Of these small systems, 24% do not comply with the maximum contaminant level for coliform during some time period.
