| Description | Concerns about sanitation and the availability and quality of drinking water differ throughout the world, depending largely on a country's social and economic development. In highly industrialized countries, discussions about water quality problems focus on various low-risk policy options and the sophisticated, expensive technologies required to reduce small waterborne risks even further. Developing countries, however, continue to struggle with ways to protect water sources from sewage contamination and provide effective water disinfection to prevent epidemics of dysentery, cholera, typhoid, and hepatitis. Although the WHO recently revised guideline values for microbial, chemical, and radiochemical contaminants to ensure low health risks for consumers, it should be remembered that these are guidelines, not mandatory limits. Not all countries will adopt the guideline values as enforceable, legal limits, and persons living and traveling in developing countries cannot assume tap water is safe. Even in cities where water treatment facilities may be adequate, tap water can be contaminated during its storage and distribution through the piping system. Contamination in the water distribution system is likely to occur in areas of low water pressure and where operation of the water supply is intermittent (e.g., water is available only during a part of the day). Locally produced bottled water may also be of poor quality. Book Name: Providing Safe Drinking Water in Small Systems |
