| Description | When I was young, growing up in a small industrial town on the outskirts of Johannesburg, it became fashionable for white parents to send their children to elocution lessons. Our English is flat and nasal, and many parents spared no expense in altering this in their children through intensive grooming. Elocution lessons happened in most white church and school halls once a week, from about 3 pm onwards, after school. Children were usually dropped off by their mothers, after lunch, or were walked to elocution by their servants. Sometimes one stayed behind after school and did homework in a classroom until the elocution teacher arrived. Then hour-long classes would take place in the hall, either privately or in small groups. I remember an epileptic kid had a fit in elocution once, and the elocution teacher held his tongue down with a wooden ruler. When he revived the class continued and the teacher seemed unruffled.
