| Description | What would it be like to live in a world without anthropology? It is worth remembering that anthropology has not always been around. It is a relatively modem phenomenon, a by-product of Western history. Ancient Greece had its poets, philosophers, artisans, priests and physicians, but not anthropologists. Among the Greeks anthropology did not exist as a subject, on account of a general incapacity to recognize the Other. Only with the advent of the Enlightenment, and the transposition of 'primitive man' from the plane of ideas to the plane of experience, did the modem anthropological project achieve its own shape and expression (Duchet 1971). If this was how anthropology began, however, then the same formula should allow us to predict its end. Granted that anthropology is driven by a desire to know and understand alterity, we can postulate that at some time in the future, in a world that has already come to terms with difference, the discipline will disappear. The success of anthropology presupposes its own dissolution. Yet nowadays this is not what we find. The evidence is very much to the contrary. We hear of wars, misery and destruction among people, along with an increase in the number of anthropologists and a proliferation of anthropological institutions around the world. Paradoxically, this expansion of the discipline seems to be accompanied by a decline in its vigour. Book Name: Creativity and Cultural Improvisation |
