| Description | In this chapter I shall explore a set of theoretical issues related to the way in which social worlds are performed; by this I mean that social worlds have no existence outside of practice and performance - however much they seem to be systematic in some sense or other. By their unique and unrepeatable acts, people actually contribute to a perceived pattern; social life is routinely choreographed by the ceremonial animal (James 2003). Stressing the performative rather than the semantic or the cognitive aspects of social worlds is - among other things - to acknowledge the prominence of time and temporality in their make-up. I shall argue that our apperception of the social depends on a sense of closure that is belied by life itself - always spilling over into new histories, new ways of thinking and new complexities. New histories are made in diverse ways, but in this chapter I shall concentrate on the processes of anticipation and creativity. The former is seen as an inherent feature of all social action, while the latter is eccentric in relation to the pattern as perceived. Book Name: Creativity and Cultural Improvisation |
