Description	The renaissance of nationalism in both Eastern and Western Europe and the consequences of ethnically-based semantics of difference in South-East Europe have caught sociology off-guard. Western sociology did not consider itself directly responsible for the missing prognosis of the surprising collapse of socialism. Yet the profession has been shaken by the unexpected importance of ethnonationalistic processes of inclusion and exclusion, which appear in the form of separatism and secessionism, virulent racism in the West, war, ethnic cleansing and even genocide in the East. There is talk of 'failure' (Nielsen, 1985: 135; Hondrich, 1992) and a 'deficit of basic theory' in sociology, which for a long time 'hardly concerned itself with subjects like the nation the nation-state nationalism or national identity' (Ettrich, 1994: 4; Sterbling, 1994). In a multitude of publications a debate has begun which concerns the social sciences in general and which could be of paradigmatic importance for the conceptualization of society in the social sciences. If there are deficits in basic theory, then grievances cannot be limited to sociology because sociology is not the sole administrator of theoretical tradition and development. As far as I can see, this debate is also developing in ethnology, the political sciences, philosophy and history. Book Name: Rethinking Nationalism and Ethnicity
