| Description | 'Multiculturalism' has become an increasingly influential framework for the conceptualization of the contingencies of global migration and ethnic relations. It is a notion buttressed by a moral ideal of the good society. Having developed into an increasingly influential political-ideological doctrine, this moral ideal appears to aspire to the position of the hegemonic credo of our times. As represented in numerous practices within education, science, politics and administration, a real institutionalized multiculturalism, to an increasing extent, creates and reproduces society. This is at least so at our own pole of the contemporary world system; a setting where the culturalist relativism of postmodernity has emerged as a paramount hallmark of modern times (Friedman, 1988).
