| Description | Within the boundaries of the United States, few zoonotic diseases have stirred as much fear of ticks as has Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF). In fact, infection by Rickettsia rickettsii and the resultant human illness has accounted for a considerable proportion of the “tick phobia” prevalent in the United States, now enhanced by the recognition of Lyme $borreliosis.^{ 20 }$ A variety of names have been coined to describe the illness depending on geographic $preference.^{ 9 }$ The most common name, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, is now a misnomer which has persisted in the face of dwindling prevalence of the disease in the Rocky Mountain regions. The synonym tickborne typhus, or simply tick typhus, is also utilized frequently by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). In South and Central America regional names predominate and include Tobia fever, Sao Paulo fever, fiebre marchada, fiebre petiquial, and febre maculosa. Book Name: Handbook of ZOONOSES |
