| Description | Until recently, plasma calcium concentration had been viewed as one of nature's constants and any deviation from its reference value (set point) was considered as an error of the controlling system. However, similar to other regulated systems, evidence has been accumulating for temporal oscillations of plasma calcium concentration and some of its controlling systems in growing rats ( 8 ), dogs ( 9 ) and chickens ( 7 ). It has been suggested that spontaneous oscillations could be generated in systems in which sequences of events associated with feedback regulation result in a lag period between perturbation and ultimate response. Therefore, apparent deviations from a given set point may represent a property rather than an error of the control mechanism.
