| Description | The Lade plastic-elasticity model was used in this work to simulate the mechanical behaviour of the granite residual soil where the Serra do Pilar railway tunnel, in Vila Nova de Gaia, was driven. The basic principles of the model and its calibration are presented. The geological and geotechnical conditions at the site, the construction methods employed and the observation system installed are briefly described, and some of the analytical results are then compared with those observed.
