| Description | A major problem associated with modern sanitary landfills is the disposal of leachate water. Presently, the safe disposal of leachate water has become a major problem in developing countries. The leachate water is produced when water permeates through the landfill and retains synthetic and organic mixes from decaying materials in the landfill. In developing countries (e.g. BRICS nations) landfill guidelines require the establishment of liners and assorted structures for the leachate to keep this water from entering the surrounding soil and groundwater. Leachate frequently requires some type of on-site treatment to expel harmful metal and natural contaminants, but in developing countries, this is ignored, causing severe health and agricultural problems. Landfill leachates are exceptionally variable from site to site and over the life of the landfill as they change with the weather, increase during the rainy season and decline during dry periods. Toxic heavy metal compounds are typical of most landfills. Additionally, numerous classes of natural combinations might be produced. Leachate from young landfills is high in biodegradable organics. Be that as it may, as the landfill ages, substances degrade and produce increased concentrations of complex organics that may not be quickly biodegradable. Complex chemical/physical and biological treatment systems may be required. The world has an expanding and growing population, and as problems stand right now, we are on a descending slope in terms of water conservation. The reuse of treated wastewater has become a suitable alternative to prevent water scarcity problems. Book Name: Waste Management Policies and Practices in BRICS Nations |
