| Description | In comparison to rodents and other smaller species, the proportion of non-human primates (NHP) used in animal-based research activities is minimal. For example, NHPs accounted for 0.2% of all animals reported in animal-based science activities in Canada in 2018, 9.6% of the non-rodent species reported to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in the US in 2017, whereas they constituted on average 0.08% of animals used in the EU between 2015 and 2017.$ ^{1} ^{–} ^{3}$ Nevertheless, characteristics of the species require that particular conditions and care be in place to ensure the welfare of the animals. In this chapter, we discuss the two most common NHP families seen in the laboratory, macaques and callitrichids (marmosets and tamarins). For example, in 2017, cynomolgus (Macaca fascicularis), one of the macaque species, was the most commonly used NHP (88%) in European countries.$ ^{3}$ Book Name: Animal-centric Care and Management |
