| Description | Apartheid was introduced into South Africa in 1948, with the advent of the National Party government. For the Coloured communities, the years from 1961 constituted a period of catastrophic upheaval, as all Coloured families living in areas proclaimed as White Group Areas were moved from their homes to new housing estates in newly proclaimed Coloured Group Areas on the outskirts of the city. The demand for adoptive children was influenced by similar factors to the supply. Smaller housing, greater poverty, and the greater need for education that came with urbanization all tended to limit the demand as industrialization and apartheid took their toll, especially among the Coloured and African populations.
