| Description | Evaluation of groundwater recharge, the most important parameter for scientific management of groundwater resources is extremely vital for India because of its arid and semi-arid conditions, predominantly being underlain by hard rocks and having peaked monsoonal precipition. This paper highlights the development of new tracer techniques as well as utilisation of isotopic and geochemical tracers for assessment of natural as well artificial groundwater recharge for both confined and unconfined aquifers. In order to circumvent the general difficulty of small time averaged recharge determined using injected tritium, the validity of chloride method for longer time averaged recharge was ascertained. Further, we have enhanced the scope of tracer methods for estimating groundwater recharge for confined aquifers by demonstrating a new methodology of conjunctive utilisation of environmental and injected tracers. Using different tracer methods, the range of natural precipitation recharge for this sub-continent is estimated to be about 20-200 mm/a (3-25% of average annual rainfall). Thus a rather limited natural recharge and increased groundwater use throughout the sub-continent calls for water conservation as well as groundwater recharge augmentation by artificial recharge structures. To assess the efficacy of artificial recharge structures like percolation tanks, we have developed a simple, inexpensive and reliable method using environmental chloride as a tracer.
