| Description | A series of tracer tests have been performed to identify and evaluate the hydrogeological conditions controlling groundwater flow in the vicinity of a public water supply (PWS) well at Kilham, in the Chalk aquifer of North Yorkshire, England. The unconfined area around the well has been designated a nitrate sensitive area (NSA), the boundary of which has been applied using local knowledge and professional judgement. In contrast, Groundwater Protection Zone (GPZ) modelling, which uses numerical methods to delineate capture zones around wells, produced a capture zone for the PWS well which differed markedly from the NSA boundary. In both cases, modelling does not take into account the complex fractured nature of the Chalk aquifer and so the validity of the results is uncertain. Preliminary tracer tests (using fluorescent dye tracers) focused on establishing connection and groundwater velocities between observation boreholes along valley floors up hydraulic gradient of the PWS. Results were used to direct further drilling and more focused tracer testing (using bacteriophage tracers) with multiple injections and sampling points including observation boreholes, the PWS well and springs. The results of the tracer test were used to extend the understanding of local groundwater flow in the Chalk aquifer and provide a realistic assessment and validation of the GPZ and NSA models.
