| Description | Heteronormativity does not entirely rule the fairy-tale world. While traditional fairy tales often included same-sex romances, interspecific relationships, and other queer indices, those which did were not the best-known examples of the form. However, feminist and queer artists and their allies have begun creating alternatives. Queering fairy tales, but also sexes, sexualities, and genders in fairy-tale media, I explore how scholars have understood (queer) fairy tales and media and how media have constructed (queer) fairy-tale characters, including the example of film versions of Hans Christian Andersen's tale “The Snow Queen.”This chapter explores how scholars have understood (queer) fairy tales and media and how media have constructed (queer) fairy-tale characters, including the example of film versions of Hans Christian Andersen's tale "The Snow Queen." As forms of resistance to the heteronormative order, queer genders and sexualities aim to destabilize the binaries that are so central to upholding normative categories. "Sexualities" mean the multiple ways that human erotic life displays within relationships, including both feelings and actions. "Genders" designate social and cultural manifestations of the allegedly natural, biological distinctions of sex, including transgender "people whose gender identity, expression or behavior is different from those typically associated with their assigned sex at birth" and cisgender people whose gender identity and expression match their assigned sex. Feminist and queer artists and their allies have begun creating alternatives, using recognizable figures like Cinderella or Rapunzel.
