| Description | Von Graefe (1864) and Bielschowsky (1922) described acquired progressive esotropia, with larger angle for distance than near, associated with moderate myopia. This is unlike the esotropia seen in patients with high myopia. Methods: We reviewed notes, finding 26 cases, age range at first presentation 37–74 years, mean of 55.5. Myopia was from -0.75 to -10.00DS, mean of -5.50 each eye. Eighteen wore glasses, 8 mainly contact lenses. All complained of horizontal diplopia. Seventeen (65%) were treated with prisms, gradually increasing in power. Results: Six patients (23%) continued with prisms. Seven patients (27%) had BTXA to one medial rectus muscle, successfully in 2 cases. Seventeen (65%) underwent surgery (mainly medial rectus recession, lateral rectus resection) with relief of diplopia and discarding prisms. Five patients suffered a recurrence usually at 11 years. Conclusion: This unusual sub-type of strabismus is a benign entity, responding well to prism correction, or surgery.
