| Description | Conventional definitions of the ductility index which are based on yielding of the reinforcement, are inappropriate for the evaluation of structural ductility of concrete beams reinforced or prestressed with FRP tendons. In this paper, a new definition of ductility index is proposed. The new definition is expressed as the ratio of the total energy to the elastic energy at the failure state of a beam. It is applicable to beams with steel as well as brittle FRP reinforcements, thus providing a common basis for comparison. Using the new definition, an evaluation of ductility index is conducted for 24 prestressed concrete beams tested previously by the authors and by other researchers. Results confirm, without the shadow of a doubt, that beams with FRP tendons tend to have lower ductility indices than beams with steel strands. However, higher ductility can be achieved by using proper design parameters or by considering several improvement methods such as fiber reinforcement, confinement, or partial prestressing. Keywords: Ductility index, elastic energy, FRP tendons, inelastic energy, rupture, structural ductility, yielding 1 Introduction Structural ductility is of main concern in concrete beams prestressed with FRP tendons due to FRP materials' linear elastic behavior up to rupture without yielding. Unless ductility requirements are satisfied, FRP materials cannot be used reliably in structural engineering applications. Thus, there is need for both quantitative and qualitative evaluations of ductility including computation, comparison, and prediction of ductility index, upon which some design guidelines could be developed when using FRP 380 Naaman and Jeong tendons in concrete members. A quantitative evaluation essentially requires a proper definition of ductility index. However, conventional definitions are inappropriate when FRP reinforcements are used.
