| Description | In this research, kapok husk (KH) as a filler in soy protein isolate (SPI) was used to replace the plastic and petroleum-based polymer films for packaging. The effects of methyl methacrylate (MMA) on the tensile properties, morphology, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), moisture content (MC), total soluble matter (TSM), gel fraction, and enzymatic biodegradation properties of SPI/KH biocomposite films with KH loading at 10, 20, 30, and 40 wt% were studied. The treated KH with MMA biocomposite films has higher tensile strength and modulus of elasticity in comparison with untreated SPI/KH biocomposite films. Nevertheless, the elongation at break, char residue from TGA, MC, TSM, and weight loss of enzymatic biodegradation reduced. All treated SPI/KH biocomposite films showed slight changes in gel fraction as KH loading increased. The treatment of KH with MMA enhanced the interfacial bonding between KH and SPI matrix in biocomposite films, which was proved by SEM (scanning electron microscopic) analysis. It can be summarized that the incorporation of MMA can improve the properties of SPI/KH biocomposite films. Book Name: Biofiller-Reinforced Biodegradable Polymer Composites |
