| Description | Based on experience gained in the construction of two long tunnels (Furka, 15.4 km; Vereina, 19 km) and large caverns, we have formulated the steps involved in monocoque lining design with regard to rock mechanics. With this formulation, we hope that the single shell lining method of tunnel construction, which offers a potential total cost reduction up to 25% compared to a double shell lining, will encourage people to take advantage of this technology to develop cost-effective, environment-friendly and safe methods for underground construction to meet the increasing demands for underground space, traffic, cost reduction, quality and safety.
