| Description | One of the difficult problems in geological science and mining engineering is the fracture modelling of rock-material. Macro-fracture mechanics is very difficult to apply to rock-material, because it does not take into account the complexity of microstructures of the rock-material itself nor the variability of conditions affecting the rock-material. One of the research projects on geological materials listed in the report on the research trends in solid mechanics (recently proposed by the American Society of Mechanical Engineering) is to determine parameters which can describe micro-structures of materials and their evolutions and also to develop experimental techniques for measuring these parameters. Therefore, it is very important both in theory and in engineering practice to establish a model for the brittle micro-fracture of rock-material and to uncover the relationship between intrinsic parameters at the microstructural level and macro-mechanics quantities. Our studies indicate that fractal dimension D may play the role of the intrinsic parameter at the microstructural level. In this Chapter, we will introduce our studies on fractal models of rock micro-fractures (Xie & Chen, 1988c; Xie, 1989d). Book Name: Fractals in Rock Mechanics |
