| Description | In this chapter, we summarize the history of industrial-organizational (I-O) psychology in the United States by highlighting four themes that have persisted themes throughout its history: concentration on productivity and efficiency, reliance on quantitative methods, a focus on employee selection, and the interplay between science and practice. We first review the business and political climate in the United States (U.S.) at the time of the founding of I-O psychology as its own discipline, as well as the intellectual climate within psychology. Then we review the history behind each of these four themes and contrast these themes as they have evolved in U.S. I-O psychology history with other types of psychology and scientific disciplines.
