| Description | In his messages to Jewish rescue activists in the free world about the Strassh of deal, Rezso Kasztner claimed that he had saved Jews from four provincial ghettos, when in fact they had already been sent to Auschwitz. This could be seen as evidence that his entire involvement in the shipments to Vienna was an invention. According to his own account, Kasztner had no reason to believe that he was involved in a rescue action or that any Jews would be kept "on ice," as Adolf Eichmann promised. He sent letters urging local Judenrat leaders to draw up lists of deportees in compliance with the deportation plan, but he suspected that all of these deportees would be sent to Auschwitz. Eichmann had granted no concessions to Kasztner, beyond allowing him to take credit for the survival of a few hundred hostages who were under SS control in Budapest. No one had been sent to Austria.
