| Description | The Nazis now turned to the destruction of the Jews in northern Hungary. The head of the Jewish rescue committee understood all too well that he would be branded a traitor unless he could show concrete achievements from his "negotiations." Rezso Kasztner's next "rescue deal" with Adolf Eichmann—the transfer of around fifteen thousand Hungarian Jews for slave labor in Austria rather than instant death in Auschwitz—must be seen in this light. Eichmann was unwilling to delay the deportation of one hundred thousand Jews, but within twenty-four hours he agreed to move thirty thousand Hungarian Jews to the Strasshof labor camp in Vienna instead of Auschwitz. Accordingly, Ernst Kaltenbrunner sent Eichmann direct orders to divert several trainloads of Hungarian Jews from Auschwitz to the Strasshof labor camp in Vienna. The chain of command in the Strassh of plan extended not from Kasztner to Eichmann to Kaltenbrunner, but from Kaltenbrunner to Eichmann to Kasztner. Book Name: Kasztner's Crime |
