| Description | The present study highlights the ethnomedicinal plants used by Valiayans tribes in the Madurai district, Western Ghats, Tamil Nadu, India. This study reveals that the Valiayans tribes who reside nearby the forest areas have the capability to search for the various uses of plants, and they rely on the medicinal plants that are available in their local environment and tend to cure various ailments. The wealth of this tribal knowledge of medicinal plants is of a great potential, mainly for die research and discovery of new valuable drugs to fight against diseases. An extensive field survey was conducted in the Madurai district. The interview method was adopted to collect information on various medicinal plants with their effective utilization. A total of 166 species belonging to 135 families of medicinal plants have been documented. The present study observed that Valiayans tribes had very good knowledge on the traditional medicine.
