| Description | While geotechnical centrifuges continued to grow in number and applications worldwide, centrifuge facilities started being developed in China in the 80s before reaching a flourishing period in recent years in number, size as well as simulation capacity. This paper introduces the past efforts put into geotechnical centrifuge development in China. The situation as it stands nowadays and plans for the future of Chinese Geotechnical Centrifuges are presented. Some of the auxiliary facilities for centrifuge model tests developed at the China Institute of Water Resource and Hydropower Research (IWHR) are also introduced. This chapter introduces the past efforts put into geotechnical centrifuge development in China. Geotechnical centrifuge modelling relies on a combination of technological developments in several fields of engineering, including mechanics, hydraulics, steel and materials, automation and controls, as well as the progress in civil engineering. China started to set up geotechnical centrifuges since the 80's and has seen extremely rapid developments in recent years owing to economic growth and the government's emphasis on the importance of science and technology. The trend in China for the coming years is that of a continuous increase in centrifuge construction, with special emphasis on higher structures, complicated environment and higher accuracy. Centrifuge laboratory designs in China specifically emphasize the centrifuge chamber and its structure, and consider the chamber as an integral part of the centrifuge itself. The rapid development of centrifuge labs in China requires more qualified engineers, operators and researchers in this field. Book Name: Physical Modelling in Geotechnics |
