Description | The seismic response of concrete gravity dams is evaluated by using a time domain FLAC analysis. A “cracked base” model is adopted, assuming an adequate uplift pressure distribution for the dam-foundation rock interface. It is demonstrated that the FLAC interface element is capable of modeling the stick-slip behavior of the Newmark sliding block. The analysis accounts for the dam-foundation rock interaction, nonlinear base sliding of the dam, and the hydrodynamic effect. It is shown that the displacement-dependent degradation of the interface properties can be modeled by FLAC. An example is presented to demonstrate that FLAC is a robust and powerful computer package for the analysis of gravity dams. Results of parametric study show how the base sliding distance and stresses within the dam body are affected by the input motions, the dam-foundation rock interface characteristics, and uplift pressure drainage system.
