| Description | With the forced abdication of Reza Shah in 1941 and the occupation of war-riddled Iran by the Allied forces, Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi inherited the Peacock Throne. The era of monarchical despotism came to a temporary halt, and a period of parliamentary democracy began, lasting until 1953. With the breakdown of Reza Shah's autocracy, political forces he had long suppressed surfaced and committed themselves to preventing the reemergence of an imperial despotism. In the 1940s, the Shah focused on reorganizing and revigorating the armed forces and on forming an alliance with a new foreign power in Iran, the United States, whose troops had entered Iran to help transport military supplies to the Soviet Union between 1942 and 1943. On July 17, 1952, he asked the Shah to grant him control of the Ministry of War. Most Iranians believed that the liberal Kennedy was critical of the Shah's autocracy and was an advocate of genuine reform. Book Name: The Making of Iran's Islamic Revolution |
