| Description | In 1896, a bankrupt merchant and an avid supporter of Asadabadi assassinated the Shah. Mozaffar ad-Din Shah was quickly crowned. It was under the rule of that timid shah that the Constitutional Movement flourished. The Constitutional Movement was the political manifestation of this discontent. On August 5, 1906, Mozaffar ad-Din Shah signed the royal proclamation ordering the creation of a Majles and the drafting of a constitution by the Majles deputies. The Persian Constitution of 1906, which included the Supplementary Law to the Constitution, was the product of a fragile compromise between the secular reformers and the ulama. The ulama participated in the movement because of their myopic vision of constitutionalism and their desire to be recognized as promoters of progressive ideas. The constitutionalists unified their forces from various parts of Iran and surrounded Teheran. The Constituent Assembly voted to support the creation of the new Pahlavi dynasty, the first dynasty ascending to power without the assistance of any tribe.
