| Description | The topic of this article is the role of inner speech and its impact on teaching and learning. First, a short introduction to cultural-historical psycholinguistics is given. Second, the historical perspectives of inner speech in the cultural-historical tradition are presented. Third, a reintroduction of the concept of language activity in psychology as fundamental for human beings and as an integral part of human consciousness and society is considered. Fourth, inner speech in the context of Soviet psychology beyond Vygotsky is examined, highlighting its relationship to learning and teaching. Fifth, the intertwined function of language activity, especially inner speech, is related to teaching and some practical recommendations are offered. Closing the chapter is a discussion of future directions of the role of inner speech and its impact on teaching.This chapter describes the role of inner speech and its impact on teaching and learning. It shows a short introduction to cultural-historical psycholinguistics and presents the historical perspectives of inner speech in the cultural-historical tradition. The chapter considers a reintroduction of the concept of language activity in psychology as fundamental for human beings and as an integral part of human consciousness and society. It examines inner speech in the context of Soviet psychology beyond Lev Vygotsky and highlights its relationship to learning and teaching. The investigation of inner speech and its role in the acquisition of cognitive processes opens several research areas. To present an overview, these are summarized in what follows under the topics of metacognition, self-talk, problem solving, valuation and autosuggestion, and identity. A remarkable connection has been discovered between metacognition and inner speech. The three steps in the "ARE" approach are "inner speech thinking steps", "inner speech facilitating comments" and "evaluation of inner speech use".
