Description | Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been considered as a promising material for achieving enhanced electron field emission due to its fascinating properties including high electrical conductivity, high aspect ratio, thermal stability, and nanoscale tip size. Especially, vertically aligned CNT arrays are an ideal configuration for high-performance field emitters. In this chapter, we introduce vertically aligned CNT arrays, directly grown on the heavily doped silicon water. Field-emission properties of the novel high aspect ratio CNT are discussed with operating devices in diode and triode electrode configuration. As a representative application of the novel CNT field emitters, X-ray, and ultraviolet lighting for medical and environmental applications are introduced.
