| Description | This chapter examines the two most prominent spatial eschatologies of Homeric narrative, namely the dark realm of Hades and the remote Aethiopians; both locales stand far apart in the corners of the Homeric universe and constantly challenge the celebrated vividness of Homer's poetic vision. These eschatological places of the Iliad and the Odyssey present us with a rather telescopic paradox: the further we are kept from them the easier they are to see, whereas the moment we attempt to get closer the image blurs. The mist of ambiguity that covers them essentially guarantees that the boundaries safeguarding the cosmic order remain in place. There might be many ways to reach Hades, but we are never given a clear picture of the land of the dead or its surroundings. Similarly, the Aethiopians are situated simultaneously at the West and East ends of the map, but in essence they dwell at a different temporal reality from the rest of the heroic world, equally remote from human and poetic experience. Their present functions as a divine diversion when necessary, by keeping the gods safely removed from the narrative, while also situating the Homeric poems within the broader epic tradition as a whole.
