| Description | This essay examines the eschatological messages and motifs in the book of Daniel in its historical background, especially the four-empire scheme, calculations of the end time, eschatological deliverer and opponents, resurrection and ex eventu prophecies. It then gives a survey of some later Jewish and Christian interpretations of Daniel up to Byzantine times. This includes the Qumran “pseudo-Daniel” writings, Daniel in the New Testament and early Jewish literature, Daniel in patristic literature and Byzantine “Danielica” and apocalypses. An important theme is the eschatological opponent, usually characterised as the anti-Christ. Finally, some examples of how the book of Daniel continues to be interpreted as predicting the future, even up to the present, are discussed.
