| Description | This chapter explores the benefits of fitness and appropriate levels of physical activity in maintaining health. It provides the importance of macronutrients, fluids, electrolytes, vitamins and minerals in sports performance and training. The chapter describes the role of supplements, 'ergogenic aids', hormones and drugs in improving sports performance and the differences between a training diet, competition diet , pre-event meal and food and fluids during and after an event. Research suggests that 'elite' athletes involved in extensive training should include at least moderate amounts of fat in their diets. Training for sports requiring muscular strength results in an increase in muscle mass and an increase in the size of muscle fibres. During training, carbohydrate intake needs to be sufficient to enable the training load to be sustained. Foods for survival should be predominantly those rich in carbohydrate in order to support physical work. Book Name: Food & Nutrition |
