| Description | Nutrition plays a crucial role in athlete health, fitness and training ability and thus has a direct impact on athlete performance. The purpose of this chapter is to address the roles of various functional foods/nutraceuticals (nutritional supplements) for endurance athletes to ensure the maximum benefits regarding athletic performance (training), body composition and optimal health status. Numerous studies have demonstrated that endurance athletes can improve their training period/duration and performance by properly scheduling their training plans with taking balanced nutrients (Bridge and Jones, 2006; Saunders et al., 2004). Since athletes (especially endurance sportsmen) do extensive workout/training or exercise, they are highly prone 75to nutritional deficiency (especially micronutrients) than the general population and hence consumption of a proper diet (balanced diet) with sufficient micro- and macronutrients will boost their performance by helping them avoid illness or injury (Lundy, 2011; Snell et al., 2010).
