| Description | This chapter focuses on how the Mongolian state and the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party attempted to instrumentalize film as a medium for propagating socialist ideologies and their sociopolitical agenda during the 1960s and 1970s. Theoretically based in the fields of political anthropology and the anthropology of art, and by drawing on the analysis of scenes, staging, and dialogues, this chapter compares the two films Ene Khüükhnüüd Üü? (“Oh, the Ladies!”) and Ankhny Alkham (“The First Step”). Both movies show two different groups in society, one that comprises “non-educated,” old people from Mongolia's rural areas who are represented as living far behind socialist achievements. The other group, on the contrary, represents a new generation of Mongolian youth that embraces socialist advances like new technologies, non-religious and science-based education, and a life in a society that provides equal opportunities for its citizens. In other words, the individual characters and separate groups pictured in these movies are meant to represent the old and new “faces of the state.” In this context, this chapter argues that in socialist Mongolia, film was a useful medium for state propaganda. Furthermore, this chapter discusses the political embeddedness of these films, contributing to the historical reappraisal of Mongolian socialism. Book Name: Socialist and Post-Socialist Mongolia |
